Current

Chelsea has great ambitions this year especially after finishing only third behind Manchester United and Manchester City in the previous season. It was also a battle with Tottenham and Arsenal until the end, but the “Blues” managed to qualify directly for this year’s Champions League.

The biggest return so far, is the return of José Mourinho. “The Special One” returned from Real Madrid and he will make sure that his team is competing for the Premier League title. Mourinho won the title in 2 consecutive years when he first joined Chelsea in 2004.

Mourinho also added quality talent to his squad. Chelsea was joined by keeper Mark Schwarzer (Fulham FC), midfielder Marco van Gink (Vitesse Arnhem), striker André Schürrle (Bayer Leverkusen) and Kevin de Bruyne (Werder Bremen). Another addition is Michael Essien who also returned from Real Madrid and re-joined his old club. However, one of the biggest rumours is that Chelsea is after Wayne Rooney. Mourinho reiterated his interest in the ManUnited player and mentioned he wants Rooney at any cost.

Chelsea FC – 2012/13

Chelsea FC is without a doubt one of the top teams in the Premier League. The club established itself as one of the top clubs in Europe after Roman Abramovich purchased the club in 2003.  Today, after investing heavily year on year in the club, the main goal for Chelsea is to be top of European football.

Since Roman Abramovich took over, Chelsea won three league and three FA Cup titles which satisfied many fans. In the past season, however, the “Blues” did not perform and finished only 6th in the league under new Manager Roberto di Matteo – worst season finish since Abramovich. However, who cares about the league if you can win the FA Cup and the Champions League. First the “Blues” beat FC Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final with a brilliant defensive performance, than played an incredible finale against Bayern Munich and secured the most important European trophy after a heated penalty shootout. Two weeks before, they won the FA Cup against Liverpool and finished with a brilliant season.

The Chelsea squad is full with top international players. The financial strengths of Roman Abramovich allows the club to invest heavily each year and add quality players. Petr Czech is in his best shape and extended his contract for another four years until 2016. Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry add quality and experience. Even though the “Blues” lost a major force with Didier Drogba, the club invested in new additions such as Oscar, Marko Marin from Werder Bremen and the brothers Thorgan Hazard and Eden Hazard.

History

Most of Chelsea’s success has come in recent years since the arrival of their Russian owner Roman Abramovich with his wealth over-seeing the first team with trophy after trophy each year.

The London club had already won the first division back in 1954/55, but since Roman’s takeover have added a further three Premier league’s to that honour list. His reign has also seen 4 FA Cup winner’s medals taking the clubs total up to 7 and has doubled the number of league cups in the trophy cabinet from 2 to 4.

A side from domestic success the last two years for Chelsea have seen their success spread across the continent winning their first ever European Champions League before following that up with this year’s Europa League success.
