Sir Alex Ferguson announced retirement!

Sir Alex Ferguson surprisingly announced his retirement on Wednesday, May 7th at 9:15 am during a Manchester United press conference. David Moyes appointment is expected to be announced at the end of the week.

Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as Manchester United manager after 26 years, 49 trophies, 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 Champions League titles. He arrived at the club in 1986 and led the Red Devils to international glory. Today, United is one of the best and most successful clubs in the world. He also has coached some of the best players in the world such as David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson commented about his retirement and said: “The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly, but it is the right time.” He added: “It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.”

Potential successors for Sir Alex are Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and David Moyes. However, Mourinho is as good as confirmed at Chelsea and Pep will take over at Bayern Munich. David Moyes is the likely choice and Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be a big Moyes admirer. He always praised the Everton manager for his good work at Goodison Park. Everton has been punching above there weight since Moyes took over and finished ahead of Liverpool in the past 2 years. Moyes’s contract is also running out at Everton which would give the manager a smooth transition. Manchester is expected to announce the new coach by the end of the week.

Ferguson’s last ever game for United will be against West Brom on May 19th. However, the last home game will be this weekend against Swansea which will be followed by a trophy presentation.
