Manchester United and Robin van Persie made their first mark of the season after winning 2:0 against Wigan in the FA Community Shield.
Championship side Wigan impressed over most periods of the game especially summer signings Grant Holt (Norwich) and James McClean (Sunderland). However, it was Dutchman Robin van Persie who took centre stage scoring both goals and securing the first trophy of the season for the Red Devils.
It took the Dutchman only 6 minutes to score his first goal of the season when his perfectly timed header went past Latics goalie Carson. However, the Latics kept controlling the ball and Owen Coyle’s team impressed against the clear favourite Manchester United.
Van Persie scored his second goal in the opening minutes of the second half after a deflection from 15 yards. It was his seventh goal in the last 6 games against Wigan. He also seemed sharp and ready for the new Manchester United season. Wilfried Zaha, Giggs and Danny Welbeck also convinced against Wigan.
David Moyes said after the game: “I class that as another piece of silverware for Sir Alex. It was his team that won the league by 13-15 points so it’s his team. The ones going forward will be down to me.”
Meanwhile, the discussions about Wayne Rooney continue. David Moyes denied a fallout with the striker and reiterated the importance of his stay at Old Trafford. Chelsea FC has been linked with the striker.
