Champions League Preview: Bayern Munich vs Arsenal and Atletico Madrid vs AC Milan on Tuesday, March 11th

10.03.2014 – Tuesday night’s Champions League action sees two quarter-final places up for grabs as Bayern Munich entertains Arsenal and AC Milan travel to Atletico Madrid.

Bayern Munich vs Arsenal on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:45pm

Champions League holders Bayern Munich welcome the Gunners to the Allianz Arena with the Germans in control of the tie courtesy of a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium. Second half goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller ensured Bayern enter the second leg as favourites to progress, leaving Arsenal to rue Mesut Ozil’s penalty miss and Wojciech Szscesny’s dismissal, both of which occurred when the score was 0:0.

Pep Guardiola’s men go into the contest in terrific form having demolished Wolfsburg 6:1 at the weekend and with the Bundesliga title all but won, Bayern will be fully focused on retaining their Champions League crown. Arsenal enjoyed a big victory of their own last weekend; overcoming Everton 4:1 to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Arsene Wenger’s team still have all to play for in the league however and currently trail leaders Chelsea by seven points with a game in hand.

Bayern overcame Arsenal on the way to winning the Champions League at the same stage last season however, despite being eliminated; the travelling fans can take confidence from their 2-0 victory at the Allianz Arena in the second leg. Goals from Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud secured the Gunners’ impressive victory and a repeat scoreline when the two sides meet again would see the tie go into extra time and possibly penalties. Arsenal will be without suspended goalkeeper Szscesny, with Lukasz Fabianski set to deputise, whereas Bayern manager Guardiola could reinstate Franck Ribery into the starting 11 after the French winger missed the first leg through injury.

Atletico Madrid vs AC Milan on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:45pm

In the night’s other fixture, Atletico Madrid hold a 1-0 lead over AC Milan with the two teams go head to head at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. Diego Costa’s 83rd minute header at the San Siro leaves Diego Simeone’s side in pole position to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in over 15 years. The home side have exceeded expectations this season and currently sit three points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid having recently drawn 2:2 with their local rivals.

Milan on the other hand have underachieved this campaign and, following another underwhelming loss in the league, sit 10th in Serie A and in serious danger of not qualifying for European football next season. Milan were eliminated at this stage of the competition by a Spanish side last season with Barcelona eliminating the Rossoneri 4:2 on aggregate.
