The 2012 London Olympic Games was such a momentous event for the United Kingdom and produced numerous British winners who are now well known sports stars. One of those was Anthony Joshua who beat Italian Roberto Cammarelle to win the gold medal in the super-heavyweight division last year.

Anthony Joshua has turned professional since that epic victory and he had his first bout last weekend against another Italian in Emanuele Leo. The London born fighter made short work of the previously unbeaten Leo, as he dispatched him within the first round with a devastating knockout, and in doing so showed his undoubted potential for the future.

It will be fascinating to see what the future will hold for Anthony Joshua with big things predicted, and the Londoner stated last weekend that he will hopefully be able to fight again on the 26th of October in Sheffield on the undercard of the Kell Brook fight, so it is not a long gap between bouts for the youngster.

This is as yet unconfirmed as there is no name mentioned for a potential opponent for Joshua, but it should be another learning experience whoever he fights. Anthony Joshua’s ultimate aim will surely be to win a World Title, but with David Haye, Tyson Fury and the dominant Klitschko brothers in the heavyweight division, then it will be a tough assignment for the Londoner.

Joshua himself has ambitions to reach the top of the sport and has said that he hopes to be fighting for a World Title within four years. One note of caution for the youngster is the example of another British heavyweight gold medallist in Audley Harrison, who according to pundits did not quite fulfil his potential during his career, so Joshua will want to be different to Harrison.

There are other fighters who have followed on from Olympic glory and had fantastic careers, with Lennox Lewis winning a heavyweight gold medal at the 1988 Olympics then going on to become an undisputed World Champion. Another example is Wladimir Klitschko who took the gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and has followed that by winning numerous World Titles, so there are good omens for Anthony Joshua.

One thing is for sure, tickets are bound to be in high demand for Anthony Joshua’s fights as they should be exciting spectacles as he hopefully rises up the heavyweight ladder in the next few years.
