David Haye to announce comeback

The Hayemaker is set to announce his return to the ring. Russia’s Alexander Povetkin, Britons Tyson Fury and David Price are likely opponents in July. Vitali Klitschko, however, ruled out any immediate meeting.

David Haye retired following his defeat against Wladimir Klitschko and returned shortly in order to meet Chisora last February. Haye was stripped of his license following a brawl with Chisora in the post fight press conference. However, Haye, now 32, has applied for the boxing licence to be reinstated and apologised to the British Boxing Board of Control for the Chisora incident. The Board is likely to be granted, subject to medical tests.

In the past, Haye consistently expressed his desire to meet WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. However, Vitali pursued a political career in the Ukraine and ended his boxing career. His brother, Wladimir, is the IBF, WBO and WBA champion and beat Haye in 2011. Wladimir will face Francesco Pianeta in May.

The Haymaker, who has a record of 26 wins in 28 fights, is likely to fight Russian Alexander Povetkin, Tyson Fury or David Price. A fight against Alexander Povetkin is most likely as Price is fighting American Tony Thompson in Liverpool on July 6th. The unbeaten Fury, who fights American Steve Cunningham in New York next month, also announced his interest.

Haye said: “[Vitali] is the only fight that interests me at heavyweight and the WBC world heavyweight title is the one belt I’m desperate to win before I retire for good.”

Vitali Klitschko, however, ruled out any immediate fight against Haye and said: “If David wants to fight, he has to wait because I have to defend my title against an official contender. After that maybe. If David Haye has a high enough position on the world rankings, we can fight each other but it will not be soon. The fight against David Haye is not everything for me.”
