The resilient Murray then hit back to win the third set 7-6 however Federer ended the contest by winning the fourth set 6-3. Federer’s victory sets up a fascinating clash with Rafael Nadal in the semi-final which is one not to be missed.

In Wednesday’s other action, 2009 Australian Open winner Rafael Nadal defeated the 22nd seed for the tournament Grigor Dimitrov. Despite number one seed Nadal being firm favourite for the contest, the Spaniard had to battle back from a set down to win by three sets to one. Dimitrov took the first set 6-3 however the Bulgarian’s joy was short lived as Nadal won the remaining sets 7-6, 7-6 and 6-2 to book his place in the semi-final. There have been some classic encounters between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer over the years and their upcoming Australian Open semi-final clash should be no different. With current champion Novak Djokovic already eliminated, both players involved in this match will fancy their chances of winning the tournament this year.

The winner of Nadal vs. Federer will face either Tomas Berdych or Stanislas Wawrinka in the final with the two set to meet in the other semi-final. 8th seed for the tournament Wawrinka defeated reigning champion Novak Djokovic three sets to two at the quarter final stage of the competition whereas 7th seed Tomas Berdych upset the odds to see off 3rd seed David Ferrer and book his place in the semi-final.
