With more than 15 games of the Barclays Premier League season left, this fixture can still be described as a crucial relegation battle. Its 16th place v 17th place and both teams will desperately want 3 points as they aim to pull away from the relegation zone. Aston Villa have 19 points, just one point ahead of Southampton who have earned 18 points so far, the same as Wigan. There is then a 5 point gap separating Wigan and Southampton from the bottom two, Reading and QPR. Neither of these teams boasts a recent record, neither of them winning any of their last four Premier League games, giving evidence of why they’re in the league position they are.

Aston Villa have had more of a torrid time of late, on the 15th December they triumphed over Liverpool at Anfield 1-3; they then went on to concede a total of 15 goals while scoring none in their next three games. As if that wasn’t enough punishment for Paul Lambert and his men, they played the first leg of the semi final in the Capital One Cup midweek and lost to Bradford despite being favourites to win. It is apparent that Villa have a very young and inexperienced squad which thus far has failed to work for them, the more experienced Richard Dunne has been on the sidelines recently and they have been made to pay, earning the unwanted title of having the league’s worst defensive record.

Southampton were thumped 5-1 in the FA Cup by Chelsea last weekend and Southampton’s leaky defence still remains. The Saints last win away from home was against fellow relegation candidates QPR back in November and they will be hoping to have a similar result at Villa Park. Adam Lallana is out for at least another fortnight and defender Jose Fonte is sure to miss out after he was stretchered off against Chelsea.

One of Southampton’s only four wins in the Premier League this season was against Aston Villa at St. Mary’s stadium and there won’t be much between these two sides this time around as the loser is likely to drop into the bottom three of the table.
