Swansea beats Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final with 0:2.
Chelsea clearly dominated the game straight from the start and Ramires had the first good chance in the 11th minute after a great combination with Oscar and Eden Hazard. Juan Mata missed another chance in the 26th minute after a great pass by Hazard. Chelsea had the majority of the possession but failed to dominate in around the Chelsea box. Swansea, however, scored the surprising lead in the 39th minute through Michu after Ivanovic lost possession just outside his own penalty area. Guzman stole the possession and passed straight to Michu who took full advantage – 0:1 Swansea and Michu’s 16th goals of the season.
Chelsea started to push for the equalizer right after halt-time. Tremmel had to make a great save after a Luiz shot in the 50th minute. Frank Lampard replaced Ramires with 20 minutes to go, before Ba was introduced 10 minutes later, replacing the ineffective Fernando Torres. Ba clashed with Tremmel in the stoppage time and felt he should have had a penalty, but he was booked for diving. Swansea extended the lead in the 90th minute when Ivanovic’s poor backpass allowed substitute Graham to intercept the ball and round the keeper and fire into the empty net – 0:2 Swansea!!!
Even Swansea coach Laudrup was delighted after the game and said: “We knew it was going to be difficult. I cannot dream about a result like this. It was a fantastic fight [however] there’s a long way to go, believe me.”
The second leg will be played on Wednesday, January 23rd at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea.
