Sabine Lisicki reached the final after a tough semi-final match against Agnieszka Radwanska. The German Lisicki beat the Polish fourth seed with 6-4 2-6 9-7 and will face Marion Bartoli in Saturday’s final.
Sabine Lisicki is the first German tennis player that reached the Wimledon final since seven-time champion Steffi Graf in 1999. Both, Lisicki and Bartoli have never won a Grand Slam title and will fight until the end in order to put their hands on one of the biggest trophies in tennis.
Lisicki’s best result was the semi-final at Wimbledon in 2011 after entering the tournament with a wild card. She is currently number 35 in the world, but already beat tournament favourites such as Serena Williams and the fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
It was a tough match against Radwanska who was solid and dictated most of the match. However, Lisicki broke Radwanska and won the first set. The errors began for the German in the second set. She struggled with her service, made 7 double faults and lost the second set. Radwanska was much better now and moved 3-0 up, but Lisicki came back and beat Radwanska with a strong serve, just like in the match against Serena Williams.
Lisicki said after the match: “It was unbelievable; the last few games were so exciting…Agnieszka played so well, it was a battle and I’m so happy to have won it I didn’t know how it would end. I fought with all my heart but I believed I could win no matter what the score was.”
Sabine Lisicki is seen as the favourite to win the title with her strong service and the crowd behind her. However, it will be a long road to lift the trophy. The women’s final will take place on Saturday, July 6th, get your Wimbledon tickets now!
