Super Bowl 2013: Baltimore Ravens vs San Francisco 49ers Tickets

The Baltimore Ravens will face the San Francisco 49ers in the 2013 Super Bowl on Sunday, February 3rd at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. However, this year’s final is also called the “The Harbowl.” For the first time ever, the Super Bowl will feature two brothers facing off – Baltimore Head coach John Harbaugh will meet his brother 49ers-Head coach Jim Harbaugh!

Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore upset favourite New England with 28:13 despite a 300+ yard passing effort by the Patriot’s star quarterback Tom Brady. Raven’s quarterback Joe Flacco threw two touchdown passes in the final quarter to secure the victory. John Harbaugh has led the Ravens into the post season for the past 5 years. This year, they had a 10-6 regular-season record while winning the AFC North. The Ravens are coming off two big playoff wins over two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Payton Manning and Tom Brady, and their defense is ready to take on the 49ers and yet another high profile quarterback in Colin Kaepernick.

San Francisco 49ers

The five time Super Bowl champions beat the Atlanta Falcons with 28:14 to earn their sixth Super Bowl appearance and give the 49ers a chance to tie the record for most Super Bowl wins in NFL history. San Francisco has never lost a Super Bowl game and is one victory short of the Pittsburgh Steelers who have six Super Bowl wins overall. The 49ers are a great team on offense and defense. Justin Smith and Aldon Smith and the rest of the defense finished second in the NFL in points allowed per game. Offensively, the 49ers had half a season with Quarterback Alex Smith and the other half with Colin Kaepernick who completed 16 of 21 passes in the win over Atlanta. The 49ers last trip to the Super Bowl was in 1995 while Baltimore’s only Super Bowl appearance was a victory in 2001.

History

Super Bowl I took place in 1967 following the 1966 regular season. The number of Super Bowls played is represented by roman numerals and in February 2013 the Super Bowl XLVII will be played. The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls, with quarterback Bart Starr being named MVP (most valuable player) in both of the matches. The New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs won the third and fourth Super Bowl which proved the AFL was the NFL’s competitive equal.

In the 1970’s, the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh dominated the decade, winning 8 games between them. In the late 70’s, the Steelers won 4 Super Bowls in 6 years. The tables turned in the late 80s as the NFC won 13 consecutive Super Bowls including 4 by the San Francisco 49ers.

The AFC and NFC have had periods of time where their teams dominated the NFL and won the Super Bowl. The last 10 years have been split by the two leagues with each one winning 5. Last season, Eli Manning won his second MVP award as the New York Giants won the Super Bowl for the second time in 5 years.
