History

The first Spanish Grand Prix in 1913 was not actually run to the Grand Prix formula of the day, but to touring car rules. It was taking place on a 300-kilometre road circuit at Guadarrama, near Madrid. The 1975 Grand Prix at Montjuic was marked by tragedy. There had been concerns about track safety during practice races, and double-winner Emerson Fittipaldi retired in protest after a single lap. On the 26th lap of the race, Rolf Stommelen’s car crashed when the rear wing broke off, killing four spectators. The race was stopped on the 29th lap and won by Jochen Mass, though only half the points were awarded.

The first Spaniard to win the event was Carlos de Salamanca in 1913 who was at the time racing for Rolls-Royce. Spain then had to wait 93years for the next Spanish driver to lead the Podium when Fernando Alonso won it in 2006 when he was part of team Renault. The most successful driver to hav e raced at the Spanish GP has been Michael Schumacher who has crowned champion a very impressive 6 times with Ferrari. Ferrari also hold the record for the team with the most victories with a healthy lead of 11 titles.
