Preview: Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspurs on Wednesday, December 26th

This Boxing Day fixture sees Villa welcome the London side, Spurs, to Villa Park where both teams will be hoping to get a late Christmas present in the form of 3 points.

Prior to their game against Chelsea on the 23rd December, Aston Villa have gone six games without defeat, including progressing to the semi-finals of the League Cup and a superb victory away from home against Liverpool. In their bid to progress up the table, striker Benteke has been instrumental for Villa and he proved that with his two goals and assist when they beat Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield. Despite being amongst the league’s lowest scorers, Villa have conceded the least out of the teams in the bottom half and if they maintain this form, they will be challenging for a top half finish and not fighting a relegation battle.

In the space of 10 days, Tottenham have four league games and they will see the likes of Aston Villa as a potential comfortable 3 points. Spurs gained a place back in the top 4 when they edged out Swansea at White Hart Lane to put themselves 2 points clear of the chasing pack. Before their game with Stoke, Tottenham have picked up an impressive 5 wins out of 6 games which also includes progression to the next stage of the Europa League. The likes of Gareth Bale, Scott Parker and Michael Dawson are beginning to come back into the frame for Spurs and Andre Villas-Boas will have a strong squad to choose from to mount a serious challenge for the Champions League places.

The head to head record between these two teams falls in Tottenham’s favour as they are unbeaten against Aston Villa in their last 8 encounters, going back to 2009. The current form of both these teams will have an effect on the outcome of this game as Villa will be no walkover in their own back yard and Tottenham will want to earn their 5th away win of the season.
