The McCoy’s Premier League Darts returns on the 7th February 2013 at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast showcasing fifteen nights across fifteen different venues including the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, the SECC in Glasgow and the Echo Arena in Liverpool, finally ending with the penultimate play-off stage at London’s O2 Arena on the 16th May 2013.
Format
The annual tournament, in its eighth year, will see the field of players expanded from eight competitors to ten. The top four players in the PDC Order of Merit after the 2013 PDC World Darts Championship will be joined by six wild card selections, based on their previous performances in the Premier League and other competitions, to make up the amount. Each player will face one another once within the opening nine weeks, competing over the best of 12 legs in a league format. The bottom two players in the league table will then be relegated, leaving the remaining eight players to face each other again over the remaining five league nights before the top four progress to the Play-Offs.
Current
This year’s tournament welcomes back five-time Premier League champion Phil “The Power” Taylor along with Premier League regulars Simon Whitlock, Andy Hamilton, James Wade, Raymond Van Barneveld, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson. Current World Grand Prix Champion and PDC World Darts Championship Runner-Up Michael Van Gerwen makes his debut in the competition and could prove a surprise package if performances of late are anything to go by. Robert Thornton and Wes Newton also make their debuts. The favourite for this year’s title is of course darts legend Phil Taylor, who recently won his 16th world title at the Alexandra Palace on New Year’s Day, closely followed by the young Van Gerwen. In the 2012 Premier League Darts, Simon Whitlock was beaten 10-7 by Phil Taylor in the final at the O2 Arena in London.
