Olympique Marseille – Matches and Tickets 2012/2013

Olympique de Marseille is also known as Marseille or l’OM. The team of Elie Baup is one of the best supported teams in France. However, it is also the record club, winning the Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France ten times and Marseille is also the only French team that was able to win the Champions League in 1994.

Current

Marseille are currently managed by former French goalkeeper Elie Baup, who has won the Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France with Bordeaux. The club currently lie in 2nd position in Ligue 1, 7 points behind big spenders Paris Saint-Germain. The 2011/12 season saw them finish in a very disappointing 10th position, but this year has seen them regroup and attempt to set the record straight. Marseilles lack of goals has been extremely worrying this competitive season averaging just over a goal a game, leaving them a long way behind if a position was to come down to goal difference.

The Europa League was the European stage for Olympique Marseille this year, but this was as glamorous as it sounds, as this failed to qualify from the groups stages losing out to Turkish side Fenerbahce and German side Borussia Monchengladbach. Marseilles record ended as playing 6 matches, winning 1, Drawing 2 and losing 3 games.

This season has seen Gignac become Marseilles leading goals scoring, playing 24 matches and successfully scoring 11 goals. The clubs number 9 transferred from Toulouse to Marseille in August 2010 for an undisclosed fee that was reported to be around 16-18million Euros. Andre-Pierre Gignac has made a total of 16 appearances for the national side with 4 goals and 1 assist along the way.

Stadium

The home of Marseille is the Stade Velodrome that has a 60,031 capacity which is located in the Southern part of the city. This has been their home ground since 1937 and has built a reputation on its lively atmospheres and high attendances. The club also boasts the highest all-time average attendance of French football.

History

The club was founded in 1899 and has spent the majority of their existence in the top tier of French football (Ligue 1). Marseille have been crowned the French champions a record ten times along with winning the Coupe de France a record ten times. 1993 saw the club become the first French side to lift the precious UEFA Champions League trophy when they ran out 1-0 winners over the Italian side AC Milan. The season after Marseille was relegated due to being found guilty of a bribery scandal resulting in being stripped of their domestic title, but not the Champions League crown. The next time they went on to win back the French title was in the 2009/10 season when they were being guided by the International hero Didier Deschamps.
