Manchester City v Manchester United on Sunday, December 9th

The Manchester Derby is arguably one of the biggest derbies in the world. There have been many exciting derbies in recent times with Manchester City becoming more competitive in recent years. United go into the game on Sunday 9th December being top of the league by four points. They are in scoring form, but are conceding quite a few goals. Manchester City haven’t looked like reigning Premier League champions in the first third of the season and lie second four points adrift of their rivals.

Manchester United

United has turned around 7 games after conceding first in a game – which must worry Sir Alex Ferguson about his defence. United, however, don’t seem to have a problem with scoring; Robin Van Persie has been one of the buys of the season with Hernandez becoming a super sub. Their attacking abilities are fantastic to watch as they attack with speed and almost always get a shot away. Their defence is worryingly fragile at the back conceding twice from corners at the weekend against Reading. United has a relatively inexperienced young defence from Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to the ageing Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra. A welcome return would be Nemanja Vidic after a lengthy absence and he is reportedly fit to play in mid-week and will try and prove his worth to be included on Sunday. United will also play Cluj on Wednesday in the last Champions League group game.

Manchester City

City has not looked like a team that is reigning champions and have looked dodgy with defensive problems as well. City’s defence has been leaky at times and inconsistent, where last season they boasted possibly one of the best centre backs in the world and an upcoming world class goalkeeper. Joe Hart hasn’t had the best of seasons so far and neither has Vincent Kompany. With Nastasic being thrown in at the deep end when Lescott was injured, they were bound to have worries. In attack, theirs is the debate whether Edin Dzekp should be starting for City week in week out after saving City on a few occasions this season after coming off the bench. Aguero hasn’t been up to his usual high standards. City will play Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday in the last Champions League group game.

The Manchester Derby is one to look forward to next week. United conceding many goals and City is a team that have the class to beat any team. Fergie will be looking to get one over rivals City after losing their last Derby 1-0 and ultimately deciding the titles fate last season. United have won 68 Derbies, but City won 6:1 at Old Trafford last season.
