Is Federer favorite to win Wimbledon?

The prestigious Wimbledon Tennis Championship starts on the 24th of June, and Roger Federer will be aiming to retain the title he won last year when he beat Andy Murray in the final.

Federer will be looking to win an eighth title if he succeeds this year but as ever this will be a tough task as there are numerous other players who could win Wimbledon. The recent French Open showed that former Wimbledon Champion Rafael Nadal is back to his best after injury, as he beat his compatriot David Ferrer in the final to complete an eighth title success at Roland Garros, so he will be a contender for Federer’s title.

One other likely challenger is Serbian Novak Djokovic who like Federer and Nadal has been a champion at SW19 previously, and will be disappointed at his semi-final exit in France thus will want to bounce back in this tournament. An additional rival is Britain’s Andy Murray, who recovered brilliantly from his final defeat to Federer last year to gain a Gold Medal in the Olympics and achieve his first career Grand Slam victory with the U.S. Open title.

Because the standard is rising year by year, there are other players who could go all the way at Wimbledon and one such example is Spaniard David Ferrer. He recently played in his first career Grand Slam Final against Nadal in the France so will be full of confidence for future.

One other player that can do well is Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Roger Federer in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2011, and at the same stage in the French Open recently, so he will be looking to play well at SW19.

Czech Republic star Tomas Berdych reached the final at Wimbledon in 2010, so is more than capable of reaching that stage once more, thus he is one more challenger to Roger Federer’s crown. The bookmakers will make Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer the favourites, which is understandable given their histories at Wimbledon, but as mentioned above, there will be plenty of other competitors who can spring surprises so it all bodes well for a fantastic tournament.
