Heineken Cup: Toulon crushed Sale, Castre and Saracens win

Three games took place in the latest set of Heineken Cup fixtures on Sunday 16th December. Castres hosted Glasgow, Munster travelled to Saracens and Toulon welcomed Sale.

Castres 10-8 Glasgow

This result means Glasgow have now lost all four of their games in the Heineken Cup. Despite dominating the first half, Glasgow could only muster up one try which proved to be costly. The second half brought a different outcome as Castre stepped up their game and the attacking efforts paid dividends as they gained a 10-8 lead. This led to a dramatic finish as Glasgow desperately tried to claw back a result. With only two points behind, Jackson had the chance to win it for Glasgow but only managed to hit the upright. Pool 4 sees Castres move up to second and Glasgow linger at the bottom with two points.

Saracens 19-13 Munster

Both sides went into this game knowing a victory would leapfrog them to top of Pool 1. Saracens Owen Farrell and Munsters Ronan O’Gara both exchanged penalties to keep the scores level before the hosts went ahead through a David Strettle try. A further three kicks from Farrell in the second half sealed the win for Saracens and Munster missed out on a losing bonus point when O’Gara missed a penalty for 16-16.

Toulon 62-0 Sale

The 100% record of Toulon was maintained after thrashing Sale and while doing so, didn’t concede a single point. This reverse fixture took place last week which had the same outcome of a Toulon victory, but they were well below par. This time round they ran in nine tries at the Stade Felix Mayol with tries coming from the likes of Jean-Charles Orioli and Michalak.
