Finally, Murray has done it and wins first Wimbledon!

The Scot finished Britain’s 77 year wait to win the Wimbledon trophy after beating Novak Djokovic in a dramatic final with 6-4, 7-5 and 6-4.

It was only Murray’s second major title after his US Open win in 2012, but he was supported by 15,000 spectators on Centre Court and millions around the UK watching on big screens in parks.

The final was a battle especially with 40 degrees on Centre Court. Murray gave 3 break points away, before the Serb netted a backhand after 3 hours and 10 minutes.

However, Murray finished Britain’s craving for another Wimbledon champion after Fred Perry in 1936 and is the first Scottish Wimbledon winner since Harold Mahony in 1896. He said: “It feels slightly different to last year. Last year was one of the toughest moments of my career, so to manage to win the tournament today…It was an unbelievably tough match, so many long games.”

It was a close match, but Murray finally converted his break in game 3. Djokovic recovered the break, but Murray moved clear after several unforced errors by the Serb. Djokovic played much better in the second set and quickly was 4-1 up. Murray, however, didn’t give up and fought back. Djokovic cracked and scrambled with many mistakes, double faults and unforced errors. All over sudden, Murray was back. It was 4-4 and the Scot was in command. Murray won the second set with 7-5. The same happened in the third set. The last game of the match took 10 tortuous minutes with Murray missing 3 big break points, but finally secured his first Wimbledon title.

The Scot added: “I have played in a lot of Slam finals, all against Roger or Novak. Roger is probably the greatest player ever, Novak is one of the mentally strongest ever. I never had experience on my side, to beat him was so tough, it was such a tough match.”
