History

The Barbarians football club was formed in March 1890. William Percy Carpmael decided to invite rugby player after the rugby season finished to play a end of season tour in north England. He initially started the club to play with players that were usually his opponents from other clubs. However, the tour was such a success that they formed the Barbarian Football Club. The first official tour took place in December playing Huddersfield and Bradford. Carpmael played over 20 games for the Barbarians and became the first president. He was introduced to the IRB Hall of Fame in 20011 for his unique contributions to the sport of rugby.
