DFB-Pokal: Mainz beats Schalke and Bayern advances after Ribery red card

Mainz and Bayern advanced to the DFB Pokal quarter-finals after tough matches against Schalke 04 and FC Augsburg.

FC Bayern played FC Augsburg once again in the domestic cup, after they beat them just 2 weeks before in the Bundesliga with 2:0. Bayern started well last night and Gomez scored from close range in the 26th after a great Ribery assist.  Referee Kinhofer denied the second goal just minutes after, after Tymoshchuk released a Wembley-style shot that ended behind the goal line. The referee didn’t see it – no goal. Ribery lost it immediately after half-time when he pushed Koo in the face. Referee Kinhofer dismissed Ribery with a red card. However, Shaqiri scored the 2:0 in the 85th minute.

In Gelsenkirchen, Schalke faced Mainz. Jens Keller was just appointed as the new manager at Schalke and replaced Huub Stevens on Sunday. His first game for the club was the domestic cup match against Mainz. Chances were rare since Schalke had to deal with a strong Mainz defense and found little to get through. Mainz surprisingly scored the lead in the 30th minute through Caligiuri. Schalke played better after the half and Obasi missed a great chance in the 74th minute. However, Huntelaar made it better and equalized after a pass from Marica. But the joy didn’t last long: After a long ball from Kirchhoff scored Muller the 2:1 for Mainz. Schalke hit the bar in overtime from 30 meters, but they couldn’t prevent the defeat anymore. Mainz qualified for the first time in club history for the DFB Pokal quarter –finals.

In the other games, Offenbach beat Dusseldorf with 2:0 and Freiburg beat Karlsruhe with 1:0. Today, is Dortmund vs. Hannover, Wolfsburg vs. Leverkusen, Bochum vs. 1860 Munich and Stuttgart vs. Cologne.
