Copa Del Rey Final: Real Madrid vs Athletico Madrid

The 110th Copa Del Rey final will be a Derbi Madrilerio, contested between Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid. The Santiago Bernabeu will be the centre stage for the game on the 17th May 2013 for the very first final that will be a Madrid derby.

Real Madrid

In the four game road to the final, Real Madrid overcame some fierce competition to prove the deserved their place on the 17th May. It started with a cruising game against Alcoyano, as Real ran out 7-1 winners over the two legs. As the competition began to pick up Celta Vigo where next on the list, when they lost the away game 2-1 but showed their dominance with a 4-0 win at home. Valencia in the quarter finals began with a good 2-0 victory that proved to just be enough to put them through as the second game ended in a 1-1 draw. Then came the semi-final as a glamorous tie against Barca came along when Madrid drew 1-1 at home which gave them the push to give a very impressive performance in the 2nd leg when then won 3-1 away from home. Real have had a very disappointing league campaign as they struggled to keep up with the power of Barcelona as the lie in second place with a significant amount of points behind the La Liga champions. However, Cristiano Ronaldo had another impressive league campaign scoring incredible 52 goals for Real and providing 11 assists for his side. The Ballon D’or runner up is always the player to watch when he’s on the field.

Athletico Madrid

The Athletico road to the final was also very competitive confronting some of La Ligas top clubs. In last 32 game, the draw throughout the Real Jaen in which Athletico won 4-0 over the two matches. Next up for the Madrid side, Getafe stood in the way but they were to strong winning 3-0 in the home fixture but drew 0-0 in the away game. The quarter final against Real Betis proved to be a lot more difficult with only a 2-0 win at home but a 1-1 draw in the away fixture. Then the semi-final against Sevilla ended 4-3 over the two games. Athletico Madrid have not had a bad season as they lie in third place behind the two powerhouses in Europe of Real Madrid and Barcelona. But when the two teams walk out onto the field the Athetico side will be looking to forget the league position and hope to put one over their local derby. Falcoa has been the driving force for Athletico with his 32 goals. The evidence of some of the top clubs in Europe watching Falcoa he can be the little piece of magic to push Athletico over the line.

Venue

The Staniago Bernabeu was finished in 1947 and has been home to Real Madrid ever since. The all seated stadium has a capacity of 85,454 and has become one of Europe’s most attractive stadiums. It has been a stage for several European cup finals as well as World Cup 1982 games.
