Southampton: Pochettino with promising start in goalless draw against Everton!

Southampton 0:0 Everton

The Premier League clash between Southampton and Everton ended in a goalless draw and a well deserved point for the Saints.

Southampton new manager Mauricio Pochettino was the main focus before the game since the surprise sacking of Nigel Adkins. However, Adkins’s contribution to the club was recognised by fans though a ‘only one Nigel Adkins’ chant before the game.

Southampton started promising with Rickie Lambert, who come close for the Saints in the opening minutes. Southampton continued to pressure and Lambert hit the post in the 20th minute after a free-kick. Lambert came over closer minutes later when a header was cleared off the line by Jelavic. Southampton played an impressive first half and seemed most likely to score. However, Everton improved with the start of the second half with Fellaini missing twice just six minutes after half time. Than, it was Jelavic who missed the ball completely from close range. Everton continued to press and Southampton tried to survive. Lambert had another great chance, but the game finished in a well deserved draw for the Saints and a promising start for new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino said: “Tonight we have done very well and created at least seven good chances to score. The only shame was that we didn’t score the goals but we created a lot of chances facing a very good side in Everton who are fifth in the league. We deserve a lot of credit although we did suffer a bit more in the second half.”

Everton will host West Brom on January 30th and South will travel to Manchester United.
