Manchester City wins League Cup after 3:1 against Sunderland

03.03.2014 – Manchester City secured the first title of the season after beating Sunderland with 3:1 in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley. Sunderland dominated most of the game, but couldn’t keep up with the likes of Yaya Touré, Nasri and Jesús Navas in the second half.

Sunderland has been chasing a major title since winning the FA Cup in 1973 against Leeds. However, it was a little surprise to see Sunderland in the Capital One Final since Gus Poyet’s team is fighting against relegation in the Premier League.

Sunderland started well with Borini, Steven Fletcher and Jozy Altidore and continued to put pressure on the ManCity defensive line especially in the opening minutes. Borini set the stage after 10 minutes when he scored the surprising lead for Sunderland. City seemed shocked after the goal and Sunderland kept pressing – especially Borini was always a thread. Pellegrini had to shake up his side in the second half.

Manchester City came back from behind and showed all their qualities in the second half. First, Toure brought ManCity back in the 55th minute with a spectacular finish over Mannone than it was Nasri who scored the lead just 1 minute later. Pellegrini immediately made some changes and sent on Navas for Aguero. It was Navas who scored the 3:1 in the 90th minute.

The Capital One Cup had the least priority for Manchester City and Manuel Pellegrini. However, it was great for City to win the first silverware of the season. City won the League Cup three times now.
